Today is the first day of school.
My son begins the 4th grade. FOURTH GRADE!!! I have to pinch myself sometimes that he is 9, nearly 10. How does so much change happen right before your eyes and you don't always see it....until you do??
Summer is THE BEST, but there are so many good things about the start of school.
There are math problems to solve, friends to make, hands to raise, lunches to pack, books to read. The schools halls buzz with the "new year" excitement. Nothing looks prettier than a bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils.
Each day when I send my sweet boy off to school, I give him a squeeze and say the same words into his ear...
Have fun! Be safe. Be kind. Work hard. I love you.
Eleven little words, but he knows the meaning behind them.
They are virtues we try to model and strive for each day. They are truths we tuck into our hearts.
This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10
Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. Proverbs 16:24
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10
Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Romans 12:10
As I send my boy off into a new school year, I remind him that even though he isn't perfect, he knows WHO is. And that's the most important thing he will continue to learn and carry this year and always.
It's my lesson, too.
Fellow mamas! Do you have words you speak over your kiddos as you send them off to school? I'd love to hear them.
Thank you, dear Jesus, for each day of grace to learn and love, grow and serve. You are the perfect example of love. Please shine your light through me so that you may be shown in my words and actions. Help me to do my best, to be a good friend, and to trust in you. Be with me in my work and in my play. In your name I pray. Amen!
