With Advent, it feels so much easier.
It’s such a bright, joyous time. Although many of them coming from a worldly perspective, reminders of the coming holiday surround us everywhere. The beginning of the Advent season comes right after Thanksgiving, another happy occasion filled with the love and warmth of family and friends. Winter is new! We’re in a cozy mood and the preparations to celebrate the birth of a sweet babe born in a manager are welcomed with open arms. The days are full of hope and light.
And then there’s Lent.
So often, I feel as though the season for preparing our hearts for Jesus’s death and resurrection comes and I barely notice. We’re coming out of the dead of winter, cold, worn and maybe even a little bitter. Besides some extra services at church and the arrival of Easter-related decor in the stores, not much changes. The days are full of drear and dark.
In contrast to Advent, Lent really gets the raw end of the deal.
But in John chapter 8 verse 12, Jesus tells us:
So many times I have found myself realizing it’s Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week, and I am completely ill-prepared and so not ready. This week of utmost importance to the Christian faith suddenly arrives, jam-packed with so many dramatic and emotional events. Over the days that follow, our hearts are wrung through the emotional ringer with the highs and lows of the scenes surrounding Palm Sunday, the Last Supper, the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus’s suffering and death and ultimately, His victorious resurrection.
Phew. What a whirlwind.
This Lent, we want more for you than that. Come along with us as we follow Jesus, His disciples and the people of Jerusalem through some of the major events of Holy Week. In this eight week study (March 4th - April 26th), we will be focusing on a different location of Jesus each week, digging into Scripture and exploring different emotions and implications of what happened there. No more cramming it all into a seven day stretch.
So just how does this online Bible study work?
1. Join our private online Bible study Facebook group here.
2 Print the study guide and application worksheet from the group once it becomes available (look for it March 1st!).
3. Follow along the eight week Bible study in our Facebook group:
Monday — Watch a quick 5-minute Facebook live recording where the Scripture we’ll be focusing on will be read and the scene set for the week
Tuesday — Write out the portion of Scripture
Thursday — Complete an application challenge on the worksheet and discuss online, if desired
Friday — Further enrichment through a quote, additional Bible passage or song
It is our prayer that this Lent will be different for you. We pray that over these eight weeks you may feel closer to your Lord than ever as you follow Him through the most important week in His earthly life.
And that you may feel encouraged and motivated to continue following Him through the rest of yours.
“To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in His steps.”
— I Peter 2:21
