when you miss them

I sit in the pew on a Wednesday evening and whisper sing:

Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me

A tear slips down my cheek.

I miss them.
My grandparents.
Three are in heaven. Mostly recently, my Papa Del was taken to his Savior's side in September. This is our first Easter without him here.

Sometimes the reality that I won't see them or speak to them again on this earth catches in my throat. I hold in the breath and it releases in a cry.

Without the promise of heaven, my grief would crush me.

We weren't made for this.
Separation.

But sin.
Sin, the separator.
It separated us from our God. And as the consequence, it separates us from our dear ones.
Sin and death and sorrow hold hands, but the chains have been broken! Death does not mean defeat anymore.

It means LIFE.
Because JESUS.

The gap holder. The Redeemer. The Savior.
He stretched His arms wide to carry our sins and bring us back into God’s family.
And now we have Hope.

He sighs, he dies,
He takes my sin and wretchedness.
He lives, forgives,
He gives me His own righteousness.
Worthy is the Lamb Whose death makes me His own!
The Lamb is reigning on His throne!

He rose, He rose,
My heart with thanks now overflows.
His song prolong
Till ev'ry heart to Him belong.
Worthy is the Lamb Whose death makes me His own!
The Lamb is reigning on His throne!

Jesus is why we sing a little louder on Easter.  He is why we can smile through our tears. He is why we know that as wonderful as this life is, the best is truly ahead. As beautiful as the moments and memories we have of our loved ones are, they are just a tiny glimpse, a foretaste of the love and beauty of our heavenly home with them.

And with our Lord.

Friend, when your heart aches and you long to see that familiar face again, rest in the peace and comfort of Jesus. Wrap yourself up in a hug of this Truth.

Our Homemaker has prepared has a place for those who believe in Him.

He lives! He lives!
And now heaven is our Home.
